Diabetes - What is an ultrasound procedure used for when examining eyes?

If you would like to consult with our Eye Physicians & Surgeons at Eye Associates of Southern California, then please contact us.

Ultrasound technology uses a piece of equipment called a transducer to view the posterior aspects of your eye. The transducer emits sound, and detects echoes which are then used by a computer to build up a picture of the eye under examination. There are no known harmful effects of ultrasound technology.

In general, Ophthalmologist use ultrasonic testing as a type of nondestructive testing to evaluate the posterior aspects of the eye, including the retina and optic nerve, or to measure their thickness.
